Russia vows full cooperation, support to Venezuela

(MENAFN) Russia has pledged its “full cooperation” to Venezuela in response to a maritime blockade imposed by the United States, as Caracas seeks to strengthen alliances against Washington’s military escalation.

In a phone call on Monday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil and Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov discussed what they described as “hostilities” and “flagrant violations of international law” in the Caribbean. According to a statement from Gil on Telegram, Moscow has committed to backing Venezuela, particularly through diplomatic efforts at the United Nations Security Council.

“Foreign Minister Lavrov firmly expressed Russia's solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with President Nicolas Maduro Moros and reaffirmed his full support in the face of hostilities against our country,” Gil said.

Moscow also issued a warning regarding the US naval presence, noting that Washington’s actions could have "far-reaching consequences" for regional stability and pose a direct threat to international maritime transport.

The move follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of deploying what he called the "largest navy ever assembled in the history of South America." While the operation is officially aimed at countering drug trafficking, it has already led to the seizure of two oil tankers, with US forces attempting to intercept a third vessel.

On Saturday, Venezuela announced that Iran had offered support to “confront piracy” by US forces. Iran’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community to "firmly oppose" the blockade, describing the US actions as illegal and unilateral.

Trump has maintained that the blockade will continue until Caracas returns what he claims are assets stolen from the United States. In response, Venezuela labeled the seizures “state-sponsored piracy” and requested that the UN Security Council formally condemn the actions to protect global navigation.
